There is no hidden X-ray function in your cell phone, and no app unlocks it. This isn't an opinion about the quality of available apps; it's a direct consequence of how X-rays work and what components a cell phone has inside.
It's worth explaining properly, because this app category is one of the oldest and most persistent in the app stores — and one that most often serves as a disguise for something else.
What is an X-ray, physically?
X-ray is ionizing radiationAn electromagnetic wave with enough energy to knock electrons out of the atoms it passes through. It is this energy that allows it to pass through soft tissues and be blocked by denser structures, such as bone or metal — the difference between what passes through and what is blocked is the image.
To produce this type of radiation, you need a X-ray tubeA heated filament emits electrons that are accelerated by a potential difference on the order of tens of thousands of volts until they collide with a metallic target. The abrupt braking of the electrons in the target is what generates the X-ray photons.
On the other side, a detector designed for that specific radiation is needed. And between the two, shielding—because the same energy that forms the image causes biological damage, which is why X-ray rooms have lead walls and the technician leaves the room.
What does the cell phone have, and why is it useless?

A cell phone runs on a battery of a few volts. There is nothing in it capable of accelerating electrons to tens of thousands of volts, and there is no metallic target, no vacuum tube, no shielding. There is simply nowhere for the radiation to escape from.

The cell phone camera uses a sensor that responds to visible light. It is behind lenses and a filter that blocks even infrared light, which is close to visible light and much less energetic than X-rays. This sensor was not designed to register ionizing radiation, and it remains so no matter how many updates the device receives.

An app controls the sensors that exist in the device. No code transforms a visible light sensor into a radiation detector, just as no app makes the cell phone measure tire pressure. When the promise is to "unlock a function," the right question is: unlock which part?
So what do these apps do?
Basically, it's a visual effect. The app opens the camera and overlays a pre-existing image—a skeleton, a circuit board, a silhouette. You point it at the arm and a bone appears; you point it at the wall and a pipe appears. It's the same image in any situation because it's a file stored within the app.
A ten-second test blows everything away: point at two completely different objects and compare the result. It doesn't change coherently because no measurement is taking place.
The part that needs to be said: the subgroup with sexual bait.
A considerable portion of this category isn't about bones or pipes in the wall. These are apps that promise... see through clothes, with a package name and description explicitly aimed at the female body.
These apps don't do anything they promise—the physical impossibility is the same. What they do is use this promise to attract installations, and from there display aggressive advertising, collect device data, or charge a subscription. It's worth naming what's also at stake: using a person's image, real or simulated, in this way is harassment and may constitute a crime.

What truly exists to "see inside" things?

Why doesn't any other band of the spectrum solve the problem?
A legitimate question is whether some other type of wave could replace X-rays. The answer hinges on two simultaneous requirements: the wave needs to pass through the material and it needs to return with information organized enough to become an image. Almost nothing fulfills both at the same time.
Near-infrared radiation, which the camera sensor can detect to some extent, doesn't penetrate fabric or walls: it's absorbed in the first few millimeters. Furthermore, virtually every cell phone has an infrared filter attached over the sensor, precisely so that this range doesn't contaminate the color of the photos. That's why a regular camera can't even see the beam from a remote control clearly, and some only see a pale glow.
Radio waves, on the other hand, can pass through walls—that's how Wi-Fi works. The problem is resolution: the minimum detail a wave can distinguish is on the order of its wavelength, and Wi-Fi works in the centimeter range. An image with a minimum detail of centimeters shows nothing useful, and it would still lack an antenna capable of scanning the scene point by point. X-rays work because their wavelength is thousands of times smaller, on the scale of atoms—and it is this same high energy that makes it ionizing radiation, capable of knocking out electrons and damaging cells, which is why its use is licensed and monitored by health authorities.
Criteria that dismantle this type of application in one minute.
- Which part would do that? If there is neither a transmitter nor a detector in the device, there is no measurement. Software processes the captured signal; it does not create a sensor.
- PermissionsAn app that promises "through-object vision" and asks for contacts, SMS, or precise location is after data.
- Description with warning the word "simulation" or "entertainment" in the footer, which is usually there.
- Block assessments with top marks and short articles published in the same week.
- Signature at the opening, before any demonstration, with a hidden refusal.
The mistakes people make in this category are predictable: waiting for an update to unlock the feature, keeping the app installed out of curiosity, and accepting the free trial. The first never arrives, the second keeps the data collection running, and the third becomes a silent monthly charge because uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription, which remains on the store's account.
What the system already offers, and how to clean the device.
Both systems display a visual indicator when the camera or microphone is activated, allow permission to be granted only while the application is open, and automatically revoke access for programs that haven't been used for a long time. On Android, Google Play Protect examines what's installed and warns about suspicious behavior.
