X-ray apps on your phone: what they are and what they risk.

Apps that promise Unlock the X-ray function on your cell phone. There are hundreds of them in stores, and none of them do what they advertise. The interesting part isn't that—it's what they do instead, and why this category continues to be so profitable after so many years.

The technical impossibility can be explained in a single paragraph. X-rays are ionizing radiation, produced by a tube that accelerates electrons with tens of thousands of volts and captured by a specific detector. Cell phones have neither an emitter nor a detector: the camera responds to visible light and nothing else. Software controls an existing sensor; it doesn't create a new one.

Once the registration is complete, let's get down to what matters in practice: how these apps make money, what they ask of your device, and what the phone's actual sensors can detect.

The business model of an app that doesn't work.

Publicidade em volume

The main point. The app is free, lightweight, and displays a full-screen ad with every tap. Since the promise attracts mass installations and usage lasts only a few minutes, the calculation ends up being based on volume. Some even display ads outside the app, on the device's home screen.

Assinatura por engano

The "full version" promises the true functionality, through a free trial that requires a credit card. Recurring charges begin immediately afterward and are discreet enough to go unnoticed on your bill for months.

Coleta de dados

Some request access to contacts, files, location, or device identifiers. None of that is necessary to overlay an image onto the camera. The data collected is the product.

A isca sexual

There is a subgroup that promises see through clothes, The app, with packaging and descriptions explicitly targeting the female body, doesn't work—but the promise generates installs, and installs generate revenue. It's worth stating the obvious: the intention these apps exploit is harassment, and using a person's image in this way can constitute a crime.

The permissions that expose the app

Any visual effect on the camera requires exactly one permission: the camera's permission. Any request beyond that deserves immediate refusal.

  • Accessibility — gives the app the power to read everything that appears on the screen and simulate touches. Never grant this to a camera app.
  • Device administrator — This makes uninstallation difficult. There is no legitimate reason for this.
  • Screen overlay — It allows you to draw over other applications, including your bank's app.
  • Contacts, SMS and calls — completely unrelated to the advertised function.
  • Install other applications — an open door for whatever comes next.

It's also worth checking where the file came from. Many of these apps circulate as APKs outside of the Play Store, which requires disabling Android protections. Installing via this method is, in itself, the biggest risk involved.

What do the actual sensors in the cell phone detect?

This is the useful part. The phone has real sensors, and they do solve some problems — but much more modest than promised.

Magnetômetro: metal ferroso, a centímetros

It's the compass sensor. It measures magnetic fields, and a nearby iron or steel object distorts that field in a noticeable way. Metal detector apps show this variation on a display.

The limitations are significant and need to be clear: the range is only a few centimeters, it only works with ferrous metals—copper, aluminum, gold, and brass go undetected—it doesn't indicate depth, it doesn't identify the object, and it's affected by anything magnetic nearby, including the phone case itself. It's useful for locating a screw or hinge behind plaster. It's not suitable for finding pipes, wiring, buried coins, or anything at a distance.

Sensor de luz e câmera: superfície, e só

The camera sees what reflects visible light. With good side lighting, it's possible to reveal irregularities in walls, cracks, and damp stains that aren't visible from the front. It's observation, not seeing through.

Acelerômetro e giroscópio: nível e ângulo

They effectively solve the practical problem of leveling frames, measuring inclination, and checking squareness. Bubble level apps use these sensors and actually work.

O que exige hardware separado

  • Thermal camera Attachable — shows temperature differences on the surface. Finds leaks and hot spots in electrical panels. Cannot see through walls.
  • Beam and cable detector — It uses capacitance or short-range radar to locate beams, pipes, and wiring. Some display the result on the cell phone; the sensor is in the device, not the phone.
  • Boroscope — a camera at the end of a thin cable, which goes through a hole and shows the inside of a wall or duct. It's the real way to "see inside," and it costs little.

If you have already installed one of these

  • Uninstall the app.
  • Review the accessibility, device administrator, and screen overlay permissions.
  • Check your active subscriptions in the Play Store or App Store and cancel any you don't recognize.
  • Run a scan with Play Protect or a known antivirus program.
  • If you installed it via APK outside of the store, disable the "unknown sources" permission again.

The general rule that remains from this story applies to any category: when an app promises a physical capability that the device doesn't have, the product isn't the advertised function. The product is you.

How can you judge any app that promises an extraordinary sensor?

There's a mental test that solves most cases: ask which piece of hardware would do what's being promised. If the answer is "none, the app does it through software," the promise is false. Software processes what a sensor has captured; it doesn't create the capability to capture it. A cell phone that doesn't have an ionizing radiation emitter doesn't suddenly acquire one because you installed something.

  • Matching partEvery real measurement has an associated physical component. Without it, there is no measurement, only animation.
  • Permissions consistent with the functionA camera app that asks for SMS, contacts, or calls is collecting, not measuring.
  • Size and originInstall only from the official store and be wary of installers that are too cumbersome for what the program is designed to do.
  • Support modelCheck if the company makes its money from advertising, subscriptions, or data, and see if this is stated in its privacy policy.

The three most common mistakes in this area are: believing that a future update will unlock the feature, leaving the app installed "out of curiosity," and signing up for the free trial to see what happens. The first never works, the second keeps data collection running, and the third becomes a recurring charge that only appears months later on the bill.

What does Brazilian law say about this type of use?

The troubling part of this segment is the bait: many of these apps subtly sell the idea of being able to see through someone else's clothes. Let's be direct—besides being impossible, this describes criminal conduct. The Penal Code punishes the unauthorized recording of nudity or intimate acts, and the dissemination of this material has its own aggravated penalty.

There are more legal layers involved. Invading someone else's device to obtain data is a crime under Article 154-A of the Penal Code, and installing a monitoring app on another person's cell phone falls precisely under that provision. The collection of personal data without a legal basis is addressed by the General Data Protection Law, which gives the data subject the right to demand access and deletion.

The tools that Android and iPhone already provide.

Both systems display an on-screen indicator whenever the camera or microphone is used, immediately revealing an application triggering sensors for no reason. Both allow granting permission only while the program is open and automatically revoke access for applications that have been inactive for a long time. On Android, Google Play Protect checks what is installed and warns about suspicious behavior.

  • 1. Uninstall the app and then open the subscription list in your store account to cancel recurring charges.
  • 2. In the privacy settings, revoke permissions granted inadvertently and check the recent access panel for the camera, microphone, and location.
  • 3. Reset the advertising identifier to break the profile created from its use.
  • 4. Check if any apps with device administrator permissions or configuration profiles remain installed.

Frequently asked questions about X-ray applications.

Existe algum celular com raio-X de fábrica?

No. Generating X-rays requires a high-voltage tube to accelerate electrons against a metallic target, and capturing them requires a detector on the other side of the object. These are large, expensive components regulated by health authorities, incompatible with a pocket-sized device—and nobody wants to emit ionizing radiation from their pocket.

E os vídeos que mostram o truque funcionando?

These are setups, or they use the front and rear cameras together to create the illusion of transparency over the hand itself. The effect only works in the rehearsed framing and does not survive testing under other conditions.

Que aplicativo usa sensor de verdade e vale a pena?

Compass, level, noise meter, code reader, and those that use the camera to scan documents. They all work within the limits of what the hardware provides and don't promise to see what's behind an opaque surface.
